The year was 1999, December 20th. Not five days until Christmas and only a few weeks until the dawn
of a new millennia, but this year was not the same. It was said everywhere that stocks would crash and it was obvious that
in one way or another, with this new chapter in time, the world would be thrown into confusion and chaos.
So why was I enjoying this
world you ask? Because I am inhuman. I am damned to eternity and cursed to forever live my life in the shadows of my own eternal
night. I am a vampire.
This day and age was perfect
for my kind. The world had long forgotten the time when my kind roamed the streets freely and ruled over all. The time when
we were thousands and powerful beyond any imagination. And the great war that sent us into hiding and sleep, and taken our
numbers to only a few hundred, had long been erased from even myths.
But please, allow me to
back up and explain myself. I am called Ludwig Unmensch, and although I begin telling my story here on this night, this is
not really where it truly begins.
I was born, to darkness
anyway, two thousand years from this everyday. At that time vampires controlled this world and we had used humans as our slaves.
We were very cruel to them and that, as the old crazy vampires used to tell us, was our down fall. They revolted against us
and sent us into sleep. But right before this, we used what power we could to cause them to forget us, so slowly over time
they would forget all and we could take control again.
And that is why I was standing
there that night, in the middle of a small town then known as Night’s Fall, on the intersection of Life and Death. You
think I’m being metaphorical, don’t you? No, that was a town for people that most would see as crazy. That was
the only place left in the world where people still believed in vampires as being real, but they loved us, not hated us.
I had awoken then because
my people that still slept planned to arise and take back the world as it once was, and as we had intended. Really, for as
smart and powerful as we are, you’d think we would have learned from our mistakes.
Well I saw things differently,
and still do. That is why I had gone to this town. I believed that with the help of the people living here and the soul I
sensed that was more in love with my kind than any other in this world, vampires and humans could exist together.
But to do what it was I
had in mind, I was going to need as many allies as possible, both human and vampire alike. The human part would not be hard,
but there were few vampires awake yet and even fewer who would see things as I saw them. After all they had decided to choose
a king that would bring back the old world and abandon their old king to where ever he was. There had even been a few that
had decided to find his coffin and kill him. My only hope was that the vampires I could find would agree that the course we
thought best two thousand years ago would only lead us to our own destruction.
And so the story begins
there, with me stood watching the new world around me. I remember it so clearly as if it had only been yesterday. Though,
maybe at my age it was only yesterday. For anyone else it had really been three hundred years since this had all taken place,
but I remembered it all so clearly and it all came back to me now. Like a daydream as unstoppable as the ones at night.
